Search engine ranking is critical to most websites. Therefore, these basic search engine definitions will hopefully better educate the web master on the basics of search engine ranking. BASIC TERMS Search Engine - a site that matches web pages to inquiries of keywords, phrases, etc. Directory - a list of websites usually compiled by human beings or specialists. Spider - a computer program that visits a site and finds the pages. The spider then stores the pages for retrieval from the search engine. Query - a keyword or phrase a person types into a search box. Crawling - the spider follows links from the page submitted. "The spider is crawling your site." |
|
Optimizing - this is the process of tuning your webpages for a specific search engine. Usually, you will employ specific strategies for specific engines. Spam - in the world of search engines, it means using a keyword more than 3 times in your keyword tag. You can be down graded for this. Hopefully, being up-to-speed on the terms used in the search engine business will help you better understand the "what's" and "why's" of search engine ranking. For
